Making Trafford better by listening to residents

Posted: Wednesday 10th October 2018

I was pleased with the turnout for our recent engagement event around how best we can improve Stretford. Around 100 people gathered at St Ann's Social Club to have their say on the future of the area and there were plenty of ideas on how we can make it a better place to live.

The feedback I have received has been really positive with people feeling they are being listened to. As a council it is important we have meaningful engagement with our residents especially with so many important things happening locally and across Greater Manchester at the moment.

The final decisions we make on some issues may not please everyone but I want people to able to say their views were listened to even if the outcome is not always what they hoped for.

A difficult issue we face is at the moment is how best to reduce air pollution. I made reference to this in a previous blog. We can’t stand idly by as literally hundreds of people across Greater Manchester die every year because of poor air quality. Legally, we are also required by the Government to let them know by the end of the year how we plan to cut air pollution. We are looking at a range of potential measures but I must emphasise nothing has been agreed. We will certainly be talking to residents and businesses before any final decisions are made.

Finally, the recruitment process has started for our new Chief Executive. This is an important time for Trafford with so many exciting things in the pipeline. I am sure we will attract the right high-quality candidate who can help us make the area an even better place to live and work.
