Christmas Recycling

Festive bin collections

Due to the Festive Season, bin collection days will change for one week with no collections taking place on Monday 26 December. Instead bin collections will start on Tuesday 27 December, meaning residents should present their bin a day later than usual. The bin collection service will return to normal on 2 January 2017.

Residents should check their bin collection calendar which shows their alternative bin collection day for the week beginning 26 December or download a collection calendar here.

Christmas tree recycling

Once you have finished with your real Christmas tree please place the tree at your bin collection point on the day your green bin is due to be emptied and we will collect it for composting.

  • Please remove any decorations from the tree before you place this out for collection.
  • Also remove the wooden block from the base of the tree as this is too big to be composted.
  • Please ensure the tree is placed out by 6:30am on the day of collection.

To find out when your next green bin collection is due to take place please see your collection calendar or download a collection calendar here.

Other Christmas recycling

Christmas cards

Plain Christmas cards can be recycled in your blue recycling bin, but any card which has glitter, glue, is over-printed in foil or a 3D image cannot be recycled. These will contaminate the waste stream and must be disposed of  in your household bin.

Alternatively, why not re-use the front of your best greeting cards for gift tags and then recycle what’s left in your blue recycling bin.

Cardboard packaging

Cardboard packaging can be squashed flat and recycled in your blue recycling bin. Polystyrene used for packaging cannot be recycled and must go in your grey household bin.

All types of cardboard can be recycled in your blue recycling bin; including:

  • Cardboard packaging such as empty cereal boxes
  • Kitchen roll and toilet roll tubes
  • Cardboard boxes - please flatten
  • Greeting cards
  • Clothes labels/tags

Wrapping paper

Plain paper wrapping paper can be recycled in your blue recycling bin or at your local recycling centre.

However, some types of wrapping paper such as those containing foil, glitter and plastic coated cannot be recycled and should be placed in your general waste bin.

Glitter is not recyclable. If you put glitter in your recycling bin - whether it's on a card, wrapping paper or a decoration - it will find its way into the recycling process and will end up contaminating the finished product and will be rejected by the paper company. Glitter in your recycling bin will contaminate the entire lorry load of recyclables. Anything containing glitter should therefore be put in your grey household waste bin.

Gift tags

Cardboard tags can be recycled, but any tags which are foil or contain glitter should be put in your household waste bin.

Blue bin collections

You can place any extra cardboard next to your blue bin and we will remove it when your blue bin is collected. Alternatively, we are offering a free additional collection of your paper and cardboard if you cannot wait until your next collection day. You can take advantage of this enhanced service up to and including Friday 6th January. You can arrange this service by phoning One Trafford on 03330 035865 (local rate).

Please remember to recycle the following items in your blue bin:

  • Wrapping paper
  • Christmas cards
  • Cardboard packaging
  • Tetrapak

All items must be placed loose in the bin and not in plastic bags.

Green bin collections

At Christmas you may find you have more food waste than usual; we will therefore continue to collect your food and garden waste on a weekly basis over Christmas and New Year. Free up much needed space in your grey bin by disposing of all your Christmas food waste in your green bin/green caddies as follows:

  • Meat and fish bones
  • Cooked and uncooked food
  • Bread products
  • Dairy products and egg shells
  • Pies and pastries
  • Fruit and veg peelings
  • Tea bags

Please remember to use the compostable bags provided. If you need additional compostable bags please phone One Trafford on 03330 035865.

Black bin collections

Don't forget to recycle all your glass, cans and plastic bottles in your black bin. You can also recycle the following using this service:

  • Aerosols
  • Foil trays
  • Clean foil

All items must be placed loose in the bin and not in plastic bags.

Thank you for recycling and seasons greetings from the One Trafford Partnership.
